Context of Use:

The service aims to empower knowledge discovery in biomedical and biodiversity literature:

  • to navigate in up-to-date collections, including PMC supplementary files
  • to improve search and retrieval thanks to semantic annotations
  • to personalize their Information Retrieval thanks to the fully customizable APIs

It allows fully customizable search in semantically enriched contents, based on keywords and/or mapped biomedical entities from a growing set of standardized and legacy vocabularies.

Need:

  • Need for a comprehensive and up-to-date search engine in a centralized literature database: SIBiLS provides a central repository for SIB research papers, making it easy for researchers to find the latest research in their field.
  • Need for advanced literature search tools: SIBiLS's APIs allow researchers to search for papers based on a wide range of criteria, including title, abstract, annotations, and publication date. SIBiLS also provides features such as filtering and sorting, so that researchers can quickly find the most relevant papers.

Added Value:

Central repository for 4 collections, supplementary data index, automatic annotations, and fully customizable search via a REST API.

Competitive Advantage:

To our knowledge, there are no REST search APIs in Lucene language, nor index on supplementary data.

A qualitative upgrade on the current use of biodiversity data:

Increased accessibility: SIBiLS provides a centralized platform for accessing and using biodiversity data from a variety of sources. Increased usability and personalization: SIBiLS provides a variety of tools and customizable services to help researchers discover knowledge in biodiversity literature.

Exemplary Use of the Service:

SIBiLS Web documentation includes examples of query and Python scripts for using APIs. Check this link.

Competencies and Skills that are needed to use the Service:

For the APIs, the user needs to have some programming skills, and master Lucene Elasticsearch query language (Boolean operators, JSON format…).

Challenges for the Users:

The service is processing a very large amount of data and might be slow to answer some queries.

Users Role in the Service Development

We might add feedback possibilities from users, allowing SIBiLS to improve its ranking.
